Solarthermal power plants

This course provides the foundations of power generation through solar energy, and the corresponding thermodynamic and constructive aspects of the field.

Contents

Concepts for the generation of heat from solar energy will be presented and compared, such as parabolic troughs and Fresnel collectors. Building on this, classic and innovative cycles for the flow of solar heat, such as ORC-processes, Kalina and flash systems, will be covered.

As continual power supply is necessary-especially when using solar energy-part of the course will deal with heat and power storage. The integration of heat storage in power plant concepts is also major part of the course. Economic feasibility studies will then be conducted, taking into account the knowledge gained.

Next to existing projects, a look at future projects and technologies, especially regarding the background of Desertec, will be part of the course.
