Energy Systems and Energy Conversion

The lecture serves as an introductory course to the topics energy systems and energy conversion in the bachelor program. The aim of the course is to give students a basic understanding of the energy systems participating in the electricity and heat sector and to show their potential and environmental influences. This includes the evaluation of different energy conversion methods (thermal and alternative) with regard to their properties as well as the evaluation of the most common fossil, nuclear and renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the calculation of process steps and conversion steps in thermal or renewable energy conversion are presented.

Content

  • Introduction to energy technology and its challenges (climate change, energy consumption and reserves, future studies, merit order)
  • Thermal energy conversion
  • Energy sources (fossil and regenerative)
  • Renewable (non-thermal) energy conversion
  • Heat supply
  • Energy Storage
