HighSafe

HighSafe, a joint Taiwanese-German project, focuses on key materials for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries that meet future requirements regarding energy density, life time, safety, environmental impact and availability of primary materials. Work packages on the Taiwanese side include the investigation of passive components such as novel binders for silicon based anodes that provide better mechanical stability and longer cycle life, the investigation of electrolyte additives that are stable at high voltages and, in joint work with German partners, the development of fire resisting electrolytes. On the German side research is conducted on silicon based anodes, ionic liquids as electrolytes and novel high energy / high voltage cathodes.

Within the project, work at TUM focuses on modeling and simulation of lithium-ion cells with silicon based anodes and high voltage spinel cathodes. The scope of the models are electrochemical, electrical, thermal and mechanical processes on electrode and cell level. Model development is accompanied experimentally by measurements of electrode and cell expansion and surface temperature distribution during operation in varying load scenarios.
