TUM-Research Center for White Biotechnology

Industrial biotechnology ("white biotechnology") uses microorganisms or enzymes for industrial production. The products include special and fine chemicals, agricultural and pharmaceutical products, auxiliaries for the processing industry, but increasingly also large-volume chemicals and fuels. In its focus on the chemical industry, industrial biotechnology relies on renewable raw materials and tries to convert them selectively by means of biological catalysts.

The TUM Research Center for White Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary institute of the Technische Universität München whose members (professors) belong to three different faculties. Central technical equipment is the TUM-Technikum for White Biotechnology in Garching.
