Development of Wind Energy Projects

Credits:

3 ECTS

Instructor:

Franz Mühle, Carlo L. Bottasso, Adrien Guillore'

Course Syllabus:

Wind energy plays a major role to achieve the ambitious goals in limiting the global CO2 emissions. Besides the technical development of new and existing concepts, it is crucial to plan new wind energy projects and to install wind turbines at appropriate locations where their potential can be fully exploited. However, developing wind energy projects is a complex task. Many factors have to be taken into consideration and different tasks - involving multiple topics and different disciplines - have to be carried out in order to achieve a successful outcome of the project. The course will give an overview of important subjects which need to be considered when developing and successfully completing wind energy projects.

The most important topics that will be addressed in the lectures are:

  • Preliminary site assessment
  • Regulatory framework
  • Financial aspects
  • Project approval procedure
  • Environmental impacts
  • Wind resource assessment
  • Wind turbine model selection
  • Wind farm layout planning
  • Grid connection and integration
  • Wind farm installation
  • Operation and maintenance

Learning Outcomes:

After successfully completing the module, students should be able to:

  • Understand the challenges related to the development of wind energy projects from pre-planning to operation.
  • Comprehend the complex and multidisciplinary approach that is necessary to successfully develop wind energy projects.
  • Know and apply the basic steps, which are required by industry and stakeholders to carry out wind energy projects.
  • Possess the necessary basic knowledge on technical, regulatory, financial and environmental aspects related to the planning, construction and operation of wind energy projects.

Course Format:

Frontal teaching with multimedia support.
