Electronic fuses are increasingly used in modern power distribution units of vehicular power systems. Their design depends on multiple factors, including the system characteristics and load profiles. This talk covers an overview of electronic fuses and power distributors in automotive applications, the key challenges in protection, reliability, and integration, and design considerations such as device selection and the software dependencies required for protection coordination, configuration, and monitoring. It also includes field-data–driven analysis with efficient processing of large telemetry datasets (for example, ~10 TB/year in BMW's internal test fleet of 1500 prototypes) and highlights open research topics.
Presenters:
Dr.-Ing. Martin Baumann is a renowned expert in power distribution systems with a strong blend of academia and industry. He earned a Diplom-Ingenieur from BA Bautzen and TU Dresden, a MSc in Power Engineering from TUM, and a Dr.-Ing. from TUM for modeling fast transients in vehicular power systems. He has over 50 patents and 26 publications in automotive power distribution.
